An eight-part documentary series covering three decades of Jay-Z's career is due to arrive on MUBI this month, directed by Rick Rubin.

The series is titled JAŸ-Z In 8, a reference to the rapper's recent change of stage name. Its first two episodes land on the platform exclusively on 19 September, with two more following each week until 10 October.

It is Rubin's first project as a director. He assembles a playlist drawn from 30 years of Jay-Z's catalogue, which frames hours of conversation between the two about key influences, formative experiences and Jay-Z's approach to artistic innovation.

Across the run Jay-Z breaks down individual tracks, among them '99 Problems', 'Public Service Announcement (Interlude)' and 'Hovi Baby', and discusses his writing process along with his life before and after fame.

Other passages turn to his childhood, the early experiences that shaped his career, and what the pair describe as the connection between art and life. A synopsis frames the series as an examination of the creative process behind the back catalogue.
