Moby used a speech at Vegan Camp Out to call on the vegan movement to stop turning on itself and to keep its attention on industrial animal agriculture.

The producer told the audience he has followed the diet for close to four decades. “I have been vegan for 39 years,” he said. “That means at some point, everyone in this room was eating hamburgers and bacon while I was vegan. And I don’t judge you, so therefore you don’t judge each other.”

He then named what he considers the real opposition, listing Burger King, McDonald’s, Cargill and concentrated animal feeding operations. “We know who the enemy is. It’s out there,” he said, describing industrialised animal agriculture as the common adversary and arguing that internal disputes only serve those companies. He closed by asking the crowd to support one another, saying the animals needed the movement’s full strength.

Animal welfare has been a fixed part of Moby’s public work for decades, taking in writing, film funding and campaigns, and making him one of the more consistent voices on the subject within dance music.

The appearance lands in an active stretch for the producer. It follows a recent show at the Old Royal Naval College in London and comes ahead of an announced headline date with Underworld at The Rose Bowl in November.
